2014XC: Day 31, July 12 – Amarillo, Texas to El Reno, Oklahoma
We left our campsite and waved goodbye to our favorite steakhouse on this trip.
There is a place famous for “buried cadillacs” right up the road from where we were. I don’t know the story, but the whole thing is really just fun. The cars are buried at an angle, in a row. However long they’ve been there I don’t know, but it must be for a really long time because the layers of paint on the cars is unbelievable. People just bring cans of paint and then just leave them there, empty or not, and then the cans are shared by other people that come to see the cars. It was pretty cool, and the kids considered it a highlight of the trip.
We pretty much had to drag the kids away from there to get back on the road. They said they all felt like “rebels” since they were illegally spray painting (there was actually a sign posted that it’s illegal to spray paint there!?)
We passed a store that had three classic Cadillacs not painted, then a bunch of Volkswagon Beetles buried and painted too. Apparently, more than one person was inspired!
Made it to Oklahoma.
Plan was to get to Oklahoma City but we stopped short in El Reno at a KOA. Gabriel and Christian went crazy when they saw the “Jumping Pillow” – they couldn’t wait to get on it!
Then to the pool…
Then back to the “pillow” before bed, and some fireworks in the distance (we didn’t see any on July 4th).
Grateful for fun things that make the kids happy along the way… 🙂
