2014XC: Day 1, June 12 – Pennsylvania to Indiana
Clothes packed? Check! House cleaned? Check! Everybody in the truck? Check! Back into the house 6 times after forgetting and double-checking things? Certainly! Besides, leaving on time is overrated – wouldn’t you agree?
So we each said our goodbyes to our home, and to our cat Tiger (even Steve too!). The night before, she was in the truck, then in the camper roaming around. She knew we were going away, although we aren’t even sure for how long. But, I gave her some catnip before we left so she was happy to nap, and I believe she is in good hands so hopefully she won’t take out her frustration on our couches.
The first day we planned to travel from good ‘ole Berks County to just southeast of Indianapolis, Indiana. We snapped a pic of the “welcome” sign for West Virginia and decided to try and do the same for each state as we reached it. We somehow missed the Ohio sign, so we improvised!
After about 660 miles, we made to our campsite in Indiana just around 9:20pm. Google estimated our travel time to be about 9 hours, but with stops it came to about 12. It wasn’t too bad, except that some McD’s weren’t friendly to the family campster (lovingly referred to from here on in as “Lil’ White”). Steve’s a great driver – he got us out of a few tight spots that I would’ve just given up on. In the end it’s always a good story to add to the memory box.
Morgan and Tyler are both pretty helpful in setting up the camper so it doesn’t take long to get settled and ready for some sleep. Steve has been driving the entire way so far, but I might give it a shot during the next haul.
