2016XC: Day 13, June 27 – Port Aransas, Texas
CampSite: Gulf Waters RV Resort
Our campsite…
Just about every site at this resort had a few commonalities…all cement pads with various brick patterns, palm trees and other foliage, cisterns or potted planters. Some had up-lighting, some had cabanas, or outside kitchens, small sheds, benches or fire-pits.
It’s kind of a good idea if you think about it – you purchase a campsite in this resort that you can rent out while your not using it. There’s not much up-keep, or possibility for renter damage, and should a hurricane come through you would likely only loose your shed or trees, but not an entire “beach house”!
Our campsite just about backed up to the dunes…
…and access to the beach was past a few beach houses (against the left) that lined the very back of the resort. To the right, we’d pass a small man-made pond where we frequently saw turtles and fish.
I have only been able to use my camera phone, so the quality of the pics isn’t the best, but better than nothing…
The sand closest to the dunes was white and powdery. The surf sand was darker and silt-like. Just at the shoreline the sand easily gave way under foot to massive amounts of baby clams. There were occasional blue crabs venturing in close to the surf to feast on the little fish. A woman I spoke to the next morning said the crabs were a little unusual for this time of year. Watershoes would have been a help but the water was great otherwise. There was a fair amount of seaweed, or at least we think it was seaweed – it looked like white, thin straws, about the size of toothpicks, and scattered all over the shoreline.
It was always shallow really far out, and that was fun once you got out past the breaking of the waves. The waves were never overpowering, instead just perfect enough to or roll with. And because it was in the Gulf of Mexico, it was bath-tub temperate and perfect.
(In case you’re wondering, the crabs in the picture above were already dead – no fish or animals were harmed to make this picture!) After a few hours, we left the beach for the pool.
The planter to the right…these were all over the campsite – I loved them!
And on our way back to the campsite for dinner…
Once it got dark, we grabbed our flashlights and headed back to the beach…
Big plans tomorrow…renting a golf cart!
