Day 14 – June 28: Port Aransas, Texas
CampSites: Gulf Waters RV Resort
Steve and I woke early to see the sunrise over the beach. It was a perfect morning for it…
Leaving the beach after sunrise, I found something for my Christmas list…
Back to our site to wait until 8:30. Everyone at this place had their own golf carts or rentals. It’s cool to have a golf cart to get around in any campsite, but the icing on the cake is when you can drive it on the beach and in town too. The only restriction was not to drive on the main road (50mph) just outside the resort, but you were allowed to drive the carts down the length of the beach 5 miles north to enter into town that way. So the rental was for 24 hours, and we…were…psyched! I walked to the office to pick it up that morning…
Back at the site, we piled our stuff onto the golf cart, then had Morgan drive us all to the beach. He and Tyler and Christian had made friends with a group of girls who were there for a soccer tournament. Morgan drove them around the beach and up into town…
and pretty much Morgan drove most of us around all day too…up and down the beach…
Then we had Morgan drive us back to the pool…
Then we all piled into the golf cart and headed down 5 miles south on the beach to check it out…
There was a way around the jetty, but we stopped here. When I was reading about this place, something was said about perhaps finding unique shells or even a rare starfish. Well, it must have been my lucky day!
Then we found some more interesting things too…a small hermit crab, and perhaps a very small jellyfish?
We headed back to our site for dinner…
…then planned to go into town for ice cream…
Jersey beaches are great, and we also enjoy some of the beaches down through Maryland and North Carolina, but this rocked!
The beaches were actually pretty solid, so in most places you didn’t need 4 wheel drive. In fact, earlier that day, the main road must have been shut down for some reason, and traffic was diverted onto the beach for a short time. Imagine how surprising it was when an 18-wheel tractor trailer, along with other cars, went whizzing down the beach! So Morgan drove us into town for ice cream. Then we stopped to take this silly picture and headed back. The boys went back to the camper, but Gabriel stayed with Steve and I to do some more surf exploring at dark. And yet another cool thing about the beaches…campfires allowed! We found this one (with Gabriel) left behind, so we hung around it to enjoy it a bit…
I’d also read some mention of man o’war jellyfish being native to this area too, mostly because of the warm temps of the water. I’d never seen one in real life – and certainly would never want to anyway, but you never know what you’re going to find at night. We actually found 5 of them – fortunately they were dying on the beach and not swimming in the water near us earlier that day!
We also found some other odd items as we were driving around…
Creepy!!! An old shoe with algae and barnacles all over it! Another thing I read was that lots of odd things, including trash, show up often on the beaches on the Gulf just because of the currents. Makes for some interesting findings.
Leaving tomorrow… 🙁
